Center Initiates Publication Program
The UCCGIA and the Map and Geographic Information Center are launching a publication program through the Babbidge
Library's Digital Commons. A number of university centers, faculty, and students are taking advantage
of this opportunity to foster scholarly communication by publishing materials in the Commons.
The Center's publications will be individual numbers in a serial titled "UCCGIA Papers and Proceedings." The
purpose of the serial will be to publish documents describing the methods used in various Center research projects,
methods used to build the digital collection of the Map and Geographic Information Center, and materials used to
train participants in the Centers' training programs. The Center expects to publish three numbers per year. In
addition to publishing digital versions of the documents through the Digital Commons, the Center will provide
two copies of the documents (one for reference and one for circulation) to the Map Library and the individual
numbers will be catalogued in HOMER.
The first publication, "Coastal Survey Maps: From Historical Documents to Digital Databases," describes a project
to create a vector databse of the Connecticut shoreline from Coastal Survey Maps. This was a
joint project of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protections and the UCCGIA.
Thanks to Tom Koenig and Jonathan Nabe for working with Center staff to launch the publication program.
